From 1907 to 1952, the Mitsukoshi department stores played a very active part in the hiring and the clothes industry of costumes of the theatre Kabuki, theatrical kind born in Japan at the XVIIe century. They thus could preserve an invaluable inheritance of approximately 350 costumes dating from the era Shôwa (1926-1989), of which some were carried by large actors of the time. For the first time, 45 kimono of this collection are presented at the Space of Arts Mitsukoshi, witnesses splendid of a theatrical kind as varied in its literary expression as in its artistic and graphic expression. These treasures are presented according to the literary repertory to which they belong. Works mainly drawn from Jûhachiban, compilation of the 18 best parts of Kabuki, as many roles of beautiful richly avoided courtesans, courroucés warriors or small brigands of mean extraction.
