The Idemitsu museum, to Tôkyô, possesses one of the richest and the most beautiful collections of Japan in the field of the ukiyo-e painting. The exhibition will present a choice of 112 paintings (suspended rollers or kakemono, folding screens, and rollers in length or e-maki) realized by the biggest artists of this school. It will redraw in particular the story of this paint since the paint of customs or fuzokuga, in the 17th century, up to the great masters of the 18th and 19th century. For reasons of preservation, the works will be presented by movement in two times on duration of three months.

Appeared to the end of the 17th century, the school of Ukiyo-e or “paint of the floating world” bloomed until the environment of the 19th century. This school is bound to the development of the big Japanese metropolises, Kyôto, Osaka and especially Edo (Tôkyô), city of the Shogun. It knew from the end of the 19th century an international glory, in reason notably of the fashion and the distribution of the Japanese prints in West, or still illustrated books. But the paints of these artists are known often much less.

The word “Mingei” is an abbreviation for “minshuteki kogeï”, which means “folk art,” or “popular art, created by the people, for the people”.
A thinker and man of action, YANAGI Soetsu campaigned his entire life for the promotion of folk art. He did this through writings, most notably in the monthly publication, “Kogeï” (which means “folk art”), teaching and with exhibits. As a reflection of the spirit and traditional Mingei techniques, he constructed the “Nihon Mingeikan” in Tokyo, during 1936.

The design of the Japanese products, very influenced from the end of the Second World War by the United States, seems to have lost most of its appropriate characteristics because of the globalization of the industrial structures. Nevertheless, the appearance of an object made in Japan always keeps a young “something eminently Japanese”. Delicious precision was brought to the finish, the attention supported towards the slightest details of function and shape; all this carries the imprint of practices which characterize the decorative arts of formerly.

The Ukiyo-e school counted some of the biggest artists of the Japanese painting, among which one Kaigetsudô Ando ( ?-1743 ), Suzuki Harunobu ( on 1724 - 1770 ), and naturally Kitagawa Utamaro ( 1753-1806 ), Katsushika Hokusai ( 1760-1849 ) and Andô Hiroshige ( 1797-1858 ). Their subjects are the modern life, Edo, its Kabuki theatres and its districts of pleasure where mix noble persons and fortunate middle-class persons. Ukiyo-e takes for subject of preference the attractive women, notably the courtesans of Shin-Yoshiwara, the district of the pleasures to Edo. Presented under an idealized day, the “beauties” of the green houses embody the taste of the luxury and the splendour which characterizes the easy urban population of the period of Edo ( 1615-1867 ).

The work of MORITA Rieko joins in the continuity of two very classic currents of the Nihon-ga: women's paintings and paintings of flowers. Her portraits, of a moving grace, try to drill the mystery of the universal femininity, and her vegetable frescoes in the brilliant colours celebrate eternal renewal of the seasons, so expensive to Japanese hearts. The Parisian public can so admire, for the first and unique time outside Japan, the invaluable floral decorations decorating the wooden sliding doors of cypress of the residential detached house of the Golden temple of Kyôto, summit of the Japanese traditional decorative art.
