	In West, the traditional Japanese art is often associated with the Zen spirituality or with the graphic boldness of the school Rimpa and the prints, much more rarely with the humour. Nevertheless, there is well and truly a culture of the laughter appropriate for Japan as shows it hundreds of works of this exhibition: prehistoric figurines, painted rollers, prints, popular images, paints Zen, Buddhist sculptures … They invite us to investigate the diverse metamorphoses of the notion of warai - translated “to laugh” or “smile” - in the arts of the Archipelago. Of the prehistory at the beginning of the modern era, with a particular accent put on the Edo period (1603-1868), the presented rooms allow us, thanks to their diversity of styles and techniques, to concern a new glance the Japanese art.

During both millenniums of its history, its consumption will pass by three phases: the age of the tea boiled under Tang (618-907), age of the tea beaten under Song (960-1279), the age of the tea infused under Ming (1368-1644).

	Beyond the views today classics of Edo, Tokyo of before 1868, Hiroshige is going to pull us in two mythical journeys, by making us borrow both roads which connect Edo with Kyoto. There is a road of the South said Tokaido and a road of the North said Kisokaido. By stopping in each of the villages of these two roads, about fifty by route, the works of Hiroshige make us penetrate in this imaginary and ancestral Japan, this dreamed world. But it is before any an internal journey in which invites us Hiroshige, a journey of meditation.

	About forty works of HOKUSAI (paints, prints and drawings), which the famous “Under the big wave”, are exceptionally presented to the public until January 7th, 2013. Protean artist to the extravagant personality, audacious creative HOKUSAI who changed signature about fifty times, left an at the same time abundant and varied work the most famous example of which “Under the big wave off the coast to Kanagawa” is probably the most famous example in the West.

	Three soloes of dance kabuki by TAMASABURO Bandô: - Yuki (The snow) - Aoino-ue (Genji Monogatari) - Kanega-misaki (Headland of the bell of the temple) Duet with SEIKIN Tomiyama (National Treasury living on Japan) TAMASABURO V is beyond doubt the best known kabuki performer of our time. Indeed, one need only consider the accolade of MISHIMA, “Onnagata is the flower of kabuki [...]. Now, all we can do is wait impatiently for a miracle to happen. This wait has been recompensed and TAMASABURO, whose elegance and delicacy evoke the working of a piece of ivory, was born to us, living proof of the vitality of kabuki”. Star was adulated, TAMASABURO Bandô reached, on July 20th, 2012, the rare title of “National living Treasury”, name offered for one person which the government chose as eminent example of the Japanese cultural tradition.
